Der Lautenspieler, Virtuose, Sänger und Komponist John Dowland (wahrscheinlich in Dublin, Irland geboren) reist zwischen 1580 und 1584 nach Frankreich (in Paris ist er im Dienste des englischen Botschafters). Er hält sich zwischen 1594 und 1598 in Deutschland auf (zeitweise in Braunschweig, Hessen und Nürnberg). 1595 unternimmt Dowlander eine Reise nach Italien (Rom, Venedig, Florenz). Von 1598 bis 1606 ist er Lautenspieler im Hof des dänischen Christian IV. 1601 kommt er nach London zurück, um Instrumente zu kaufen. Ab 1597 veröffentlicht John Dowland seine « livres d’aire » sowie Kompositionen für Laute. 1612 erhält er den Posten des zweiten Lautenspielers am Hofe des englischen Charles I. In ganz Europa berühmt, war John Dowland wahrscheinlich der größte Lautenspieler seiner Zeit .
