Mauro GIULIANI (1781-1829)

Mauro GiulianiItalian guitarist and composer. His first instrument was the violoncello, an instrument that he never completely give up during its life. He also studied the violin. Later Mauro Giuliani became devoted to the guitar, quickly becoming a virtuoso.

In 1806 Mauro Giuliani moved to Vienna and became famous, the equal of the many great instrumentalists who were active in the Austrian capital at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1815 Mauro Giuliani performed, with the pianist Hummel, (followed later by Moscheles), the violonist Mayseder and the violoncellist Merk, in a series in chamber concerts in the botanical gardens of Schönbrunn palace. The concerts were called "Dukaten Concerte", because of the price of the tickets, which was one ducat. Moreover in 1815, Mauro Giuliani was the official artist of the celebrations of the congress in Vienna. Two years earlier, December 8, 1813, he had played (probably of the violoncello) in an orchestra for the primier of Beethoven's seventh symphony.

In Vienna Giuliani had a minor success as a composer. Mauro Giuliani worked most of the time with the publisher Artaria, who published most of his works for guitar, but he did businesses with all the other local editors, who spread his compositions throughout Europe. He developed a reputation as a teacher there. Among his many students were Bobrowicz and Horetzky.

In 1819 Mauro Giuliani left Vienna, mainly for personal reasons: his property and his bank accounts were confiscated to pay debtors. He returned to Italy, passing through Trieste, Venice finally settling in Rome. Mauro Giuliani brought back his daughter Emilia, who was born in 1813. She was educated at the convent "the adorazione del Gesù" from 1821 to 1826, like his illegitimate daughter Maria. In Rome he did not have much success. He published some compositions and gave a concert.

In July of 1823 he began a series of frequent voyages to Naples to be with his father, who was seriously ill. During this time, which we could call the "Neapolitan period," Mauro Giuliani frequently appeared in duet with his daughter Emilia, who had become a fine guitarist.

Towards the end of 1828 his health started to worsen. He died in Naples on May 8, 1829. Mauro Giuliani left 150 compositions for the guitar. Among his most important work are the concertos for guitar and orchestra, opus 30, 36 and 70; a series of fantasies, opus 119-124, called the "Rossinianes," several sonatas for violin and guitar, a method, a quintet, and some duets for voice and guitar.
