Wenzeslaus Thomas MATIEGKA (1773-1830)
Austrian guitarist, pedagogue and composer. Wenzeslaus Thomas Matiegka was born in a family of musicians, where he received his first instruction in voice, the violin and the piano. In 1788 he furthered his musical knowledge and began the study of harmony and composition. About 1791, he began his training in law at the university of Prague, learned the violoncello, then decided to devote himself to music in 1800. In 1802 he discovered the guitar and started to write for it and gradually acquired a reputation as a composer. He left forty works for solo guitar as well as some duets and trios. In 1817 he became choir director of the church of Saint Léopold in Vienna and composed mostly sacred music. He died in Vienna in 1830, leaving a wife and six children. His the funeral was taken care of by the city because of his modest economic condition.
