Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828)

Franz SchubertAustrian pianist, violist, singer and Austrian composer. The last of the great traditional Viennese musicians, Franz Schubert was the son of a schoolmaster and of a former maidservant. He did his musical training with the parish organist of Lichtental. Became a singer with the Royal Chapel of Vienna. He took lessons with Salieri (1809-1813) at the municipal college. In the family quartet he had the viola part and his father, that of violoncello. He lived poorly but conscious of their genius, admired Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. He was surrounded by the affection, often demonstrated, of a small circle of friends. In 1822, year he composed the Wanderer Fantaisie. He is contracted an incurable venereal disease at the time which caused him much pain. The work of Schubert includes more than 900 opus numbers. It comprises 15 operas, 6 masses, more than 600 Lieder, and 9 symphonies. His chamber music includes 16 quartets, a Quintet called "the Trout" (1819), sonatas for violin and piano, 22 sonatas for piano, 8 impromptus, 6 musical moments, and many dances.
