Agustin BARRIOS MANGORÉ (1885-1944)
Guitarist and Paraguayan composer. He received his first musical education in a college Jesuit, where he studied guitar. Agustin Barrios Mangoré studies with the 13 years old Gustavo Sosa (a pupil of Juan Alais), who introduced to the young Agustin the methods of Sor and Aguado, to the pieces of Tárrega, Viñas, Arcas y Pargá.
Besides music, he receives training in history, mathematics and literature at the National College of Asunción. Agustin speaks Spanish and Guarani, he reads and understands French, English and German, and is interested in philosophy, poetry and theology.
Agustin Barrios was a great improviser in music: testimonies showed that he improvised in a spontaneous way in many of his concerts. He composed approximately 300 pieces, part of which unfortunately was lost. Barrios gave concerts from 1906 to his death.
In the years 1934-1936 he came to Europe, playing in Belgium, Germany, Spain and England. Barrios was the first guitarist to record discs which speed was 78 rounds per minute. Many of his works survived thanks to these records. Barrios died very poor on August 7, 1944 in El Salvador.
We can recall some of his works like: Un Sueño en la Floresta (1918), Romanza en imitación al violoncello (1919), Mazurca Apassionata (1919), La Catedral (1921), Preludio en Sol (1921), Valses Op. 8 (1923), Danza Paraguaya (1924), Choro de Saudade (1929), Julia Florida (1938), Una Limosna por el Amor de Dios (1944).
