Laudista, virtuoso, cantante y compositor, nacido probablemente en Dublín, Irlanda, John Dowland viaja a Francia entre 1580 y 1584 (está entonces al servicio del embajador de Inglaterra en París). Reside en Alemania entre 1594 y 1598 (curso de Brunswick y Hesse, Nuremberg), en 1595 efectúa un viaje a Italia (Roma, Venecia, Florencia). De 1598 a 1606 es Laudista en la corte de Christian IV de Dinamarca. En 1601, vuelve de nuevo a Londres para comprar instrumentos. A partir de 1597, John Dowland publica libros de aires así como piezas para laúd. Obtiene en 1612 el puesto de segundo Laudista en la corte de Carlos I de Inglaterra. Famoso en toda Europa, John Dowland fue probablemente el más grande Laudista de su tiempo.
