Luthiste, virtuose, chanteur et compositeur. John Dowland est probablement d'origine Irlandaise. John Dowland voyage en France entre 1580 et 1584, il est alors au service de Henry Cobham, ambassadeur d'Angleterre à Paris. Il séjourne en Allemagne entre 1594 et 1598 (cours de Brunswick, de Hesse, et de Nuremberg). En 1595 il effectue un voyage en Italie (Rome, Venise, Florence).

A Londres, John Dowland publie en 1597 "The First Booke of Songes or Ayres of Foure Partes with Tableture for the Lute", suivront des livres d'airs ainsi que des pièces pour luth. Cette première publication connaît un succès exceptionnel, elle sera rééditée quatre fois. En 1598, il retourne à Kassel, invité par le Landgrave de Hesse, puis il reprend un poste à la cour de Christian IV de Danemark de 1598 à 1606.

Il revient à Londres en 1606. En 1612 il obtient le poste de second luthiste à la cour de Charles I d'Angleterre. Célèbre dans toute l'Europe, John Dowland fut probablement le plus grand luthiste de son temps. Il meurt à Londres au printemps 1626.
